Redesigned showroom for the anniversary

On the occasion of our 60th anniversary, we look back on a successful history and celebrate the unveiling of our newly designed showroom at the STOBAG headquarters in Muri. We look forward to celebrating together with our customers, partners and employees.

A success story full of courage and pioneering spirit: 1964-1980

Ernst Gremaud founds STOBAG with a lot of courage, pioneering spirit and great enthusiasm for innovation. His goal: to simplify the installation of sun blinds. He experimented with self-made tools and the first aluminum blind components.

1964: STOBAG founded in a cider cellar

With his last salary, 30-year-old Ernst Gremaud founds STOBAG in a cider cellar in Gattikon, Zurich.

1965: Own gearbox with sand casting process

Ernst Gremaud experiments and constructs his own gearbox using sand casting processes just one year after the company is founded. 

1968: Groundbreaking invention becomes a bestseller

Gremaud's first invention - the universal component for roller shutters becomes a bestseller.

1971: Withdrawal from direct sales

Ernst Gremaud makes a strategic change. In future, STOBAG will be working with specialist partners.

1978: Expansion of production in Merenschwand

The business continues to grow, also abroad. After a good 10 years, STOBAG expands to Merenschwand.

1978: Focus on aluminum components

The modular aluminum system was far superior to the steel products of the blind manufacturers of the time in terms of cost, weight and functionality.

Industrial production and expansion abroad: 1980 - 2000

Son Gianni Gremaud, who has been in the business since the mid-70s, takes over the management of the company in 1983. STOBAG develops from a pure component manufacturer to a manufacturer of finished awnings. As demand increases, expansion begins with various national agencies and partnerships in Europe, Canada and Brazil.

1988: Development from component to finished awning manufacturer

STOBAG recognizes the potential of balcony as an outdoor living room and develops from a pure component manufacturer to a manufacturer of finished awnings.

1988: Expansion abroad and second location in Muri

As demand increases, expansion abroad begins with a national agency in Austria and partnerships in Germany, France, Italy and Brazil. A second location is established in Muri.

1988: Revolutionary telescopic arms technology

In 1988, Ernst Gremaud develops the revolutionary telescopic arms technology. 40 years later, the tried-and-tested concept is being revived with the VIVO Trilliant awning.

1990: First box awning

STOBAG developed the first awning with a closed box for optimum protection of the fabric against the elements. The TENDABOX model still enjoys great popularity today in its new design.

1992: First purchasing system tool for dealers

As the variety of products and the volume of orders increases, so does the complexity of order processing. Gianni develops the first MS-DOS-based purchasing system.

1995: A new location is founded in Lausanne

Production is expanded with the purchase of a factory building in Lausanne. From 2012, STOBAG Lausanne becomes a pure sales site with a new showroom concept, which is later rolled out to all locations.

Automation and individualization: 2000-2018

In the nineties Gianni Gremaud focuses on automation and mass customization. STOBAG grows with additional locations and enters the coating business. With Alain Michel, David Halter and Leandro Gremaud, the third generation joins the company in 2010.

2000: New building - Muri becomes the headquarters

The Muri site is expanded and modernized with a considerable investment at the time.

2006: Europe's most modern production facility is built in Muri

As a visionary, Gianni Gremaud relies on fully automated logistics with a high-bay warehouse and switched to paperless production.

2007: First glass roof system TERRADO

STOBAG develops and launches the first glass roof system. TERRADO is a robust aluminum construction that offers perfect all-weather protection.

2008: Market entry in Canada, USA and Brazil

Development of the American market by establishing STOBAG locations in Canada, USA and Brazil.

2012: New pergola patio shade

With PERGOLINO, STOBAG launches the first flexible and slimline patio shade.

2015: Point of sales with showroom concept

The showroom concept successfully introduced in Lausanne in 2012 will be implemented in Muri and all other locations from 2015.

Generation focus and transformation: 2018 to today

As CEO, Alain Michel will continue to drive forward digitalization, integration and automation from 2018. The business model is being further developed from B2B to B2B2C. The focus is on proximity to end customers and architects as well as intensifying dealer (specialist partner) relationships. 

2018: Realignment and refocusing

With a clear market focus on DACH regions and North America, the portfolio is also being revised. STOBAG is focusing more strongly on end customers and architects. 

2019: Digitalization and integrated retailer processes

With the Digital Hub, a dedicated team of six software developers will be set up and the integration of handler and customer processes will be strengthened. 

2021: New coating plant in North America

Production in North America is being expanded and a coating system installed. With the integration of all value-added steps, all products for the North American market can be manufactured locally in the future.

2022: New brand identity and online customer experience

The new orientation and positioning as a premium manufacturer is emphasized with a fresh market presence. STOBAG is also focusing on an inspiring customer experience online.

2023: Integrated and award-winning solutions

STOBAG successfully focuses on holistically integrated solutions and has received several awards for innovative products, high product quality and excellent design.

From 2023: Specialization and expansion of production plants

In Germany, production for Outdoor Living is expanded and in Hungary, production is doubled with a major investment. In Switzerland, too, production of classic articulated arms awnings is comprehensively modernized after 20 years.

Showroom in new splendor

Just in time for the anniversary, the showroom at the headquarter in Muri is being remodeled and redesigned after 10 years. The new concept symbolizes the STOBAG promise: Making living spaces more valuable together. Architects and customers will be able to experience the new shading concepts from mid-November 2024.
